Implementing Contract Management in Wine Country
Background
E. & J. Gallo Winery was founded in 1933 by Ernest and Julio Gallo in Modesto, California. As the largest exporter of California wines, the company has been instrumental in introducing American consumers to wine and pivotal in establishing Sonoma County as one of the premier wine growing regions in the world.
A family-owned business, Gallo recognized the need to better manage the complexity of their legal contracts on a global level. To this end Gallo selected Ariba Contract Management (ACM) version 9r1. This initial phase of the project would focus on implementing the system for managing supplier development, global sourcing, and benefits accounting - processes representing roughly half of total contracts begin used.
To enable their success, Gallo selected The Shelby Group as an implementation partner based on its reputation as a leading Ariba implementer. Shelby would work closely with the Gallo team to champion, advice, guide, and assist the project for both functional design and technical development needs.
Challenge
Gallo recognized key issues prohibiting them from being more effective at managing contracts including:
- Over a dozen locations of original contracts
- No automated contract process
- No central repository of contracts
- Various levels of contract complexity and resources
- Common process challenges with existing processes
- Sensitivity of security as a privately held organization
Since subsequent phases were planned on a wider deployment to twice as many departments, laying the groundwork for solving these issues would be critical for user acceptance and continued executive sponsorhsip of the contract management project.
