Understanding the existing technical customizations
With several years of running Ariba, a handful of different people from internal resources to consultants had touched the Ariba code that would include customizations in programming languages such as Perl and Java. Understanding the maze of customizations made to Ariba Buyer, T&E and dozens of eForms made defining requirements for code migration a challenging task.
Managing a complex interface between Ariba and SAP
Getting a handle on the ERP interface with Ariba would also be critical. The transmission of information between between Ariba and SAP entailed several intermediary middle-ware components including TIBCO, Mercator, custom Java code, and MQ-Series. Though Shelby had provided recommendations to improve the Ariba interface to SAP, THD had a clear goal to keep the existing interface schema intact.
Coordinating with an offshore contingent
THD had outsourced Ariba support to a large offshore company in India. During the upgrade, the Shelby team would often need to get information about current code, as well as provide information about core code changes and coordinate at critical points during testing. Working and communicating effectively with the offshore team would be absolutely necessary to support 8.2.2 after the upgrade was complete.
